An r-Adaptive Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Nonequilibrium Hypersonic Flows
Abstract
We present the application of a high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method to high-speed flows with realistic phenomena typical of hypersonic flight environments. This work builds on a previously developed scheme that combines hybridized DG methods, optimal transport based r-adaptivity, and artificial dissipation continuation techniques, all of which aim to address challenges in efficiency and robustness for DG discretizations of these flows. Previously demonstrated on ideal gas flows in simple geometries, we detail two advancements that both forward the goal of a robust and efficient high-order hypersonic flow solver. First, the optimal transport r-adaptivity, previously only demonstrated on simple domains, is applied to canonical axisymmetric geometries using a domain decomposition approach. Additionally, the robustness of this method is tested by incorporating real gas effects describing chemical nonequilibrium, necessary for simulating high-enthalpy flows.
