A Study to Evaluate the System Viability of Integrated HLFC (Hybrid Laminar Flow Control) With Anti-Icing Functionality
Abstract
This study proposes and assesses an integrated system combining Hybrid Laminar Flow Control (HLFC) with anti-icing functionality for aircraft wings, utilising a gas-bearing electric compressor. By repurposing the high-temperature exhaust air from the HLFC compressor for anti-icing, the system could obviate the need for dedicated heating equipment, thereby reducing structural weight and optimising energy efficiency. A simplified heat transfer analysis indicates that the chamber air temperatures required for effective anti-icing appear to fall within realistic of compressor exhaust conditions. In addition, a ductless suction and recirculation architecture is introduced to accommodate the trend towards thinner wings. Taken together, these findings support ongoing efforts in aircraft electrification and suggest a promising pathway for integrating aerodynamic and thermal management in future sustainable aviation.
