Evaporation Dynamics of a Cloud of Droplets Under Elevated Temperature and Pressure Conditions
Abstract
This study investigates the evaporation dynamics of droplet clouds under varying temperature and pressure conditions, with relevance to extreme environments such as detonations. Evaporation behavior was analyzed for a cloud of n-Dodecane droplets in an N2 gas environment. Three different 2 law were used: mass diffusion, heat transfer, and a mixed model. All models indicate that higher pressures and temperatures significantly alter evaporation rates. Dense droplet clouds exhibit longer lifetimes due to reduced mass diffusion rates caused by increased fuel vapor concentrations. All three models highlight the role of temperature gradients in accelerating evaporation under extreme conditions causing the critical evaporation time at which chocking (vapor saturation) occurs to decrease. Pressure effects generally reduced the critical / ratio, beyond which the droplet cloud cannot be treated as a single parent droplet.
