Simplified 2D Tools for RDRE Doublet Simulations
Abstract
The objective of this paper is to develop and apply two simplified methods for RDRE doublet studies, specifically two-dimensional numerical simulations that rapidly iterate over sweeps of doublet geometries with changing inlet conditions. This is first completed by automating a single doublet in a non-chemistry environment for a test matrix of injector impingement angle and stiffness. This process involves creating the geometry in MATLAB, building a mesh in ANSYS ICEM CFD, simulating the case in ICFD++ , and post-processing the data in Tecplot. Cases are quantified based on their discharge coefficient, recovery rate, and an identified mixing parameter. Results from an initial feed pressure-impingement angle test matrix are discussed, with higher feed pressures and impingement angles generally resulting in better mixing and faster recovery. The second method applies a real detonation wave to a set of doublets. This simulation includes the complexity of chemistry and mixing. Discharge coefficient and recovery rates are also tracked via this method. Preliminary results demonstrate that these methods can accurately track key physics and are much less computationally intensive than a three-dimensional full-chemistry RDRE simulation.
