3D Iterative Parametric Optimization Study of a FSAE Aerodynamic Package Using Computational Fluid Dynamics
Abstract
This study focuses on the development and iterative parametric optimization of an aerodynamic package for a Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) racecar. For numerical simulation of the flow field ANSYS Fluent is employed, along with ANSYS Design Modeler for geometry parameterization, ANSYS SpaceClaim for geometry preparation, ANSYS EnSight for post-processing, and MATLAB for design point generation/optimization. The study iteratively optimizes a full aerodynamic package through a sequential design process beginning with an undertray, followed by the addition of multi-element front and rear wings, sidepods, and other small aerodynamic devices to meet the initial quantitative aerodynamic performance metrics with a −Cl of 3.19, Cd of 1.29 and a CoP of 40.6% forward. Throughout the design iteration/optimization process, qualitative analysis of flow structures is performed in conjunction with numerical data for a more efficient optimization process. This work seeks to create an effective and holistic design that provides a robust aerodynamic base for an FSAE car.
