Static and Fatigue Analysis of a Novel Bending and Stretch-Dominated Star Arrowhead Auxetic Structure
Abstract
This study aims to develop static and fatigue behavior of a recently developed novel structure. A new eccentric link beam concept and a brace is incorporated into a star-arrowhead (SAH) auxetic topology to improve upon the ductility of the structure while maintaining the high Poisson’s ratio and stiffness exhibited. The study compares the stiffness, energy absorption, and negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) between the SAH structure and the novel structure. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed to evaluate the NPR of the structures under tension and compressive loading. A displacement control was conducted to characterize the stiffness behaviors between the two different topologies. The novel structure can maintain the high stiffness that is indictive of a stretch-dominated mechanism auxetic structure while increasing the NPR. The findings of the novel auxetic structure highlight the potential for advancements in aerospace, soft robotics, and biomedical spaces. Analysis of the novel structure focused on maintaining stiffness, increased energy absorption capabilities, and an increased NPR. Fatigue analysis of the novel structure revealed the implementation of the eccentric link beam had no effect on the fatigue behavior of the SAH structure.
