Abstract

Multiphase detonation research is relevant for developing detonation combustion systems to capitalize on the high energy density of liquid fuels for efficient systems. The current paper seeks to expand on the body of liquid fuel detonation research by examining the role of fuel selection in detonation structure and behavior. These experiments are done in a turbulent shock tube in which oxygen and an atomized cloud of fuel fill the facility and are then ignited through a pre-detonator. Through pressure measurements, shadowgraph, CH* chemiluminescence, and Mie scattering, insights into cloud detonations are revealed. It is shown that a detonation lengthscale wherein liquid fuel remains past the detonation front is present for each fuel but varies in width from 1.61mm to 0.5mm.
