Acceleration of LES and Finite Rate Chemistry Modeling of the Preccinsta Burner by Adaptive Mesh Refinement and a Thickened Flame Model
Abstract
Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has become a powerful tool for studying turbulent reacting flows in complex combustion systems such as gas turbines and burners. Among the available combustion models, the finite rate chemistry model stands out for its ability to capture detailed chemical kinetics and complex phenomena like flame extinction and reignition. However, applying this model to premixed combustion at high temperatures and pressures is computationally demanding, particularly due to the need for fine grid resolution to accurately resolve flame fronts. To address this challenge, this study investigates the use of Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) and the Thickened Flame Model (TFM) as strategies to accelerate LES-based combustion simulations. The PRECCINSTA burner, experimentally studied at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is simulated using CONVERGE to improve computational efficiency without compromising the accuracy of key combustion features.
