Optimization Strategy for Aggressive S-Shaped Inlet Compressor Ducts
Abstract
The challenging geometrical constraints imposed by the fuselage and engine position, induce a strong 3D design of inlet ducts. This could result in a large pressure drop and a strong degree of distortion of the flow at the engine inlet. These have a negative impact on engine performance and stability. The large number of design variables and the complex set of constraints make the design problem suitable for an automatic optimization process. This paper reports the preliminary results of the design of a highly integrated compressor inlet duct, aiming at reducing both pressure loss and flow inhomogeneity. The design methodology will be detailed and applied to a technology relevant test case. In its last part, CFD simulations will be employed to provide an insight of the flow field generated by the optimized component.
