Interaction Between Normal Shock and Heterogeneous Transverse Jet
Abstract
To investigate the mixing effects caused by the interaction between a leading shock wave and a jet in detonation propagation through inhomogeneous reactive media, Schlieren visualization was conducted in an analogous chemically inert system, where the detonation wave is replaced by a normal shock wave. Gas species and operating conditions were selected to satisfy the similarity to hydrogen–air, methane–oxygen, and propane–oxygen systems. The results showed asymmetrical structures —presumably caused by baroclinic torque, Richtmyer–Meshkov instability, or both— in the shear layer following the passage of the normal shock wave. Though the normal shock accelerated or decelerated depending on the molecular weight of the injectant, the propagation velocity attenuated and merged into the extrapolation of the downstream because the test section width was sufficiently large relative to the jet exit diameter, a damping phenomenon was observed in which the shock wave.
