Abstract

The ULTRA-COMPACT electric drive train is a very efficient and power dense power electronics and motor system intended for hybrid-electric propulsion. A Dash 8-100 aircraft is considered with a battery system on board and a right-sized version of the ULTRA-COMPACT drive train supplying both engines with power through takeoff and climb. This is compared to a current state-of-the-art drive train and found to save approximately 2.2% mission fuel consumption due to the reduced weight and higher efficiency of the ULTRA-COMPACT.
