The 1914 Papin-Rouilly Gyroptère: A Retrospective Analysis
Abstract
This paper details the history of the design, development, and performance of the Papin Rouilly Gyroptère, developed in France between 1911 and 1914. This monocopter vehicle, drawing inspiration from maple seeds, was envisioned as a more efficient alternative to contemporary attempts at vertical flight, taking advantage of a large swept area and control mechanisms entirely unique in the field of rotorcraft. A survey of the design, including details regarding the control and stability of the vehicle is discussed, and a performance analysis of the vehicle is provided. Additionally, a discussion on the merits of the vehicle under ideal operating conditions is included, detailing the theoretical performance characteristics assuming the appropriate engine had been available.
