Abstract

Flexible aircraft exhibit complex aeroelastic behaviors that pose significant challenges to conventional control strategies. This paper presents an Incremental Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion (INDI) control approach tailored for flexible aircraft, aiming to enhance robustness and adaptability in the presence of structural flexibility and unmodeled dynamics. Unlike traditional dynamic inversion techniques that rely on accurate system models, INDI leverages sensor feedback to incrementally update control actions, thereby reducing dependency on precise modeling. The proposed controller compute control increments that stabilize both rigid-body and elastic modes. Medium altitude long endurance unmanned aircraft (MALE) is being examined to demonstrate the proposed work. Simulation results on an aeroelastic aircraft model demonstrate the effectiveness of the INDI strategy in maintaining stability and performance across a wide flight envelope. The approach shows promise for real-world applications where model uncertainties and flexibility-induced dynamics are prevalent.
