Data-Driven Modal Analysis of Shock-Wave Boundary Layer Interactions Over a Rigid and a Compliant Surface
Abstract
Shock-boundary layer interactions (SBLI) are routinely encountered in, and have a major influence on, the functioning of high-speed aerospace platforms. Turbulent SBLIs are characterized by various physical mechanisms that occur across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, and therefore present a unique modeling and prediction challenge. In this work, we apply data-driven resolvent analysis and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) to analyze shock boundary layer interactions over rigid as well as compliant surfaces. We present a brief overview of our numerical setup, used to perform high-fidelity simulations of shock-boundary layer interactions, as well as our implementation of data-driven resolvent analysis algorithm. Using these data-driven modal analysis tools, physical mechanisms occurring over different spatial and temporal scales, such as the lower frequency (LF) motions related to the shock-bubble system and the higher frequency motions related to separating shear layer, are analyzed for turbulent SBLIs over rigid and compliant surfaces. Using SPOD, we also show how the presence of a compliant panel alters SBLI dynamics. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of data-driven methods in extracting dominant features from the dynamics of complex SBLIs, paving the way for utilizing these tools in conjunction with high-fidelity simulations to efficiently model, predict, and control SBLIs.
