Modeling Thermomechanical Behavior of Sintered Porous Transpiration Cooled Plates
Abstract
Transpiration cooling is a desirable active cooling method due to the temperature reduction it can achieve with lower coolant mass flows than film or convective cooling. A current challenge in the design and analysis of these systems is a way to understand whether thermomechanical failure will be present, especially in stochastic porous materials. An analytical model of the cooling performance and material properties of a sintered porous transpiration plate is presented. Mechanical and thermal failure maps are generated to visualize when such a system can be used and when failure occurs. Results show a broad range of operating conditions in these high heat flux environments. These findings can help identify material, porosity, and mass flux requirements to sustain hypersonic flight.
