Abstract

A datalab studio for simulation and design of vertical axis wind turbine blades is configured within the patent-pending EnerghxPlus platform. Using the energy audit aud and analysis microservice of the platform, the estimation of theof the wind energy potential at the University of Lagos enables the setup of the subsonic wind tunnel at the thermofluid laboratory. To enable viable wind energy in Sub-Saharan Africa, this study bridges the gap between computational design and the performance of locally fabricated Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) blades. We validate NACA 0012 and NACA 0015 profiles are validated through computational fluid synamics (CFD) and wind tunnel testing, revealing that manufacturing-induced surface roughness significantly reduces performance versus predictions. NACA 0015 is identified as superior, providing a critical framework for developing and deploying effective, locally sustainable renewable energy systems. The paper concludes with a performance prediction for a full-scale VAWT system and a definitive plan for field deployment, providing a crucial bridge between computational design and tangible, sustainable energy solutions for off-grid AfricaVAWT integration with the EnerghxPlus platform in the Canadian, U.S. and Nigerian energy markets.
