Abstract

The purpose of historical dating –documentary branch of Chronology– is established, its dependence on celestial mechanics, the obligation to date every dispatch to give it validity, and the usual ways of expressing it. To do this, the main historiographical contributions from Antiquity are inspected, reviewing the progress and diversity of computations as well as the methods of conversion between them, and, above all, a critical review is made of the successive normalizers, polemicists and innovators since Hellenistic Greece, with particular attention to the publications (manuals, tables, minutes of scientific meetings, magazine articles, online resources and any other contributions on the subject) of the main schools on Diplomatics
