Palabra e imagen en el siglo XVI: un método audiovisual en la evangelización del Nuevo Mundo
Abstract
One of the methods used by the first missionaries, especially the Franciscans, in the evange- lization of the peoples of the New World is based on the use of the image in its most diverse forms of manifestation: paintings, engravings, canvases, pictographic catechism, etc., very much in harmony with the use of images on the part of the Indians in the transmission of their knowledge. This method, authentically audiovisual, is developed by the Franciscan Diego Valadés in his Rhetorica Christiana, in which twenty-seven engravings appear for the first time, widely used in the evangelization and conversion of the Indians
