Abstract

This article seeks to understand the sexual life of Castilian monks and friars between the 13th and early 16th centuries, as this topic has received little attention due to various doc- umentary difficulties. First, it studies the norms that were created to limit contact between monks, friars, and women as much as possible, preventing sexual desire from arising. It then examines different cases of regular clerics who did not observe chastity, which leads to an analysis of who they were, who their lovers were, and what types of relationships they maintained. It also analyzes cases of homosexual monks and friars. It then delves into why these men were punished, beyond their transgression, and how. Finally, it compares the sexual lives of monks, friars, and nuns, revealing tolerance toward sexual transgressions among men but not among women.
