Abstract

An efficient and reliable cooling system is essential for pharmaceutical operations, which are highly sensitive to temperature and humidity and depend on chilled water supply. At the B. Braun facility, the existing aircooled chiller showed declining performance and inefficiency, operating at 1.61 kW/TR with maintenance and operational limitations. To address this, a Cooling as a Service (CaaS) model was implemented by replacing it with a higher-efficiency water-cooled chiller with a better coefficient of performance. This upgrade achieved a 51% reduction in energy consumption. Under the 10-year CaaS contract, the Energy Service Company (ESCO) is responsible for investment, design, construction, operation, and maintenance, with asset ownership transferred to B.Braun at contract end. This study evaluates the technical and commercial performance of the CaaS implementation and the shift from CAPEX to OPEX, showing improved energy efficiency, reduced CO₂ emissions, and enhanced long-term reliability and flexibility.
