The Syntactic Patterns and Meaning of Emoji Combinations in Social Media Communication
Abstract
This study investigates the syntactic placement and pragmatic functions of emoji’s in social media communication, focusing on 100 comments from selected Instagram posts by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Using qualitative descriptive and exploratory methods, the research applies Functional Pragmatics and Herring’s Pragmatic Function Theory to analyze how emoji’s placed at the beginning, middle, or end of messages influence meaning, emotional tone, and engagement. Findings reveal distinct communicative roles: beginning-positioned emoji’s set the emotional tone, middle-positioned emoji’s enhance clarity and relational interaction, and end-positioned emoji’s reinforce sentiment and provide closure. Six primary functions emotive, illocutionary, relational, pragmatic marker, referential, and mitigating were identified across all positions. The results demonstrate that emoji placement is not random but strategically employed to shape interpretation, intensify messages, and foster engagement. This study contributes to the understanding of digital discourse by highlighting the syntactic and pragmatic significance of emoji usage, offering insights for linguists, educators, and digital communication practitioners.
