Abstract

Abstract The energy industry faces growing demands for efficiency, accuracy, and accelerated decision-making in upstream operations. EnergyAI addresses these challenges by leveraging cutting-edge AI technologies—Agentic AI, Multimodal AI, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)—to enhance exploration, reservoir characterization, drilling optimization, and field development. By fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) with domain-specific knowledge, EnergyAI serves as an intelligent orchestrator, integrating generative AI to streamline workflows, reduce manual effort, and improve subsurface and operational insights. EnergyAI is constructed on a robust three-tier agentic architecture. The foundation is a generative AI gateway utilizing models like Azure OpenAI and EnergyAI-tuned LLMs, ensuring optimal performance-cost balance and supporting memory management, detailed logging, and chat history retention. The second layer offers shared tools like NLP to SQL conversion and ML model analysis, enhancing retrieval and reasoning capabilities. The final layer is designed to feature generative AI agents as co-pilots for subject matter experts (SMEs), with working prototypes leveraging advanced reasoning to streamline data gathering. Powered by Azure AI Search, the system employs a scalable PaaS-based retrieval backbone with dynamic pipelines that auto-scale to maintain responsiveness under heavy workloads. A domain-specific knowledge graph further enriches cross-agent reasoning, enabling deeper subsurface insights… EnergyAI leverages RAG within an Agentic and Multimodal AI framework to revolutionize decision-making in the energy sector. It integrates structured and unstructured data (1 million+ documents), including drilling reports, subsurface interpretations, and all upstream transactional data. AI agents are developed to support use cases like enhanced exploration, advanced geologic modelling and effective field development and assist SMEs in making informed decisions swiftly. EnergyAI introduces a novel Agent-to-Agent (A2A) communication framework, enabling seamless collaboration between specialized AI agent through intent detection. This architecture ensures Autonomous workflows for repetitive tasks (e.g., log normalization, seismic QC), enhanced decision support through dynamic data retrieval and multimodal analysis and scalable AI adoption across upstream teams, from geologists to drilling engineers. EnergyAI RAG agent able to save significant efforts of engineers for quick information retrieval, incident investigation & root cause analysis, lessons learned training & knowledge transfer and enables accelerated exploration, reservoir analysis and enhanced drilling operations. Well log &seismic QA/QC, horizon & fault interpretations agents are able to save significant efforts of geophysicists and Petrophysicsts EnergyAI represents a paradigm shift in upstream digital transformation, combining generative AI, agentic autonomy, and multimodal reasoning to drive efficiency, reduce costs, and unlock new insights. By integrating AI co-pilots into daily workflows, energy companies can achieve faster, data-driven decisions while maintaining operational excellence. Future enhancements will expand into various geophysical & reservoir workflows, automated reservoir simulation, and drilling optimization—further solidifying EnergyAI as a cornerstone of next-generation energy intelligence
