Automated Workflow on Synthetic Borehole Imaging in Real-Time Well Placement
Abstract
Abstract Real-time density and resistivity images play a crucial role in well placement operations to assist field geologists to steer the well trajectory within the target reservoir zone. However, acquiring such data is costly, and the quality of the resulting image logs can be compromised, leading to interpretational uncertainties and potentially inaccurate decision-making. This paper proposes an innovative approach to create synthetic borehole image logs by leveraging conventional well logs and automating the process with Python workflows. This paper addresses a new methodology and detailed workflows to generate synthetic image logs using automated workflows based on conventional log curves such as Gamma Ray, Bulk Density, etc. The process involves resampling and de-spiking of the real time data and creating a depth shift table based on bit size and delta parameter. In the final step, different types of synthetic image logs can be created based on the conventional log curves, providing field geologists with clearer images to inform their decision-making. All the workflows are automated and outputs can be automatically updated when new real time data is received. The novel automated workflow provides high-quality synthetic image logs to field geologists that offer superior proximity to the drilling bit compared to traditional density image logs, enabling timely decisions on well trajectory adjustments to keep the well in reservoir zone. Early decision-making is crucial in drilling operations, as it directly impacts the well's success. By facilitating earlier interventions, synthetic borehole image logs can potentially enhance operational efficiency, reduce drilling costs and boost productivity by maximizing reservoir contact through optimal well steering. Such savings accrue from avoiding unnecessary corrections later in the drilling process, which can be far costlier due to increased complexity and logistical challenges. Therefore, the economic implications of adopting this technology are profound, underscoring its value proposition for enhancing well placement operational efficiency and reducing expenditure in drilling projects. This novel workflow has been applied in several drilling operation projects in several oil and gas field. It's clear, quick and accurate output has helped the field geologist with enhanced decision making on well placement and wellbore trajectory adjustment. The workflow utilizes real time conventional log curves, a standard and cost-effective component of every well, eliminating the need for additional expenses. Automation of the workflow enables geoscientists to receive the synthetic image logs in real time, facilitating prompt and informed decision-making.
