Curating Sinophone Scholarship: Highlights from an Annotated Bibliography Project
Abstract
This paper presents the second-phase outcomes of Sinophone Studies: An Annotated Bibliography, an open-access, librarian-led initiative supported by the American Library Association’s Carnegie-Whitney Grant. The project aims to provide a platform that promotes both scholarly outcomes and supporting resources for the emerging field of Sinophone studies. Our current focus centers on resource identification, selection, and thematic classification. Analysis of the selected resources confirms that Sinophone studies is a vibrant and evolving field, with increasing scholarly engagement around themes such as diaspora, identity, migration, and LGBTQ experiences. At the same time, our work has surfaced several challenges, including the limited discoverability of primary sources, the blurred boundaries between Sinophone and Chinese Studies, and the constraints of traditional classification systems like the Library of Congress Subject Headings. In response, we are developing customized thematic categories and implementing a rigorous review process to ensure that selected works are meaningfully organized and accessible to diverse users. We will also share our early reflections on potential user needs based on preliminary feedback collected from online surveys. While outreach efforts are still in progress, we are committed to fostering dialogue and collaboration as the project evolves. By highlighting this ongoing work, we hope to contribute to broader conversations about how libraries can support research and learning, especially in fields that span multiple languages, regions, and disciplines.
