Abstract

Knowledge exchange and cultural activities between academic libraries and university faculties are essential components of library services and cultural development in higher education institutions. These activities not only strengthen the connection between libraries and the academic community but also enhance the cultural influence of libraries, promoting the diversified development of library cultural initiatives. This poster explores the innovative and multifaceted collaboration between the University of Hong Kong Libraries and academic faculties, with a particular focus on the enduring partnership between the Library's Preservation Centre and Professor Yang Yuanzheng from the Faculty of Arts. It emphasizes their shared commitment to cultural preservation and inheritance."Contents Include:1. Teaching and Learning Support: By adopting an interdisciplinary knowledge integration strategy, the course integrates preservation and conservation expertise to enhance the curriculum. Co-taught with professional conservators, the course systematically explores the evolution of ancient books and traditional Chinese paintings, including the history of their techniques, formats, and materials. Building on this foundation, an interactive platform that combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience was established. By utilizing the library’s physical collection for hands-on teaching and incorporating observation and experiential sessions, the course transforms abstract concepts into tangible understanding, creating a multidimensional curriculum that is both academically rigorous and engaging.2. Promotion and Utilization of Special Collections: In collaboration with Professor Yang, the Libraries organized the "Music in Print - Selections from the Fung Ping Shan Library and Western Rare Book Collection" exhibition. This event, which focused on music in ancient books, systematically showcased the library’s unique collection of Chinese and Western rare books. By making this precious collection accessible to the public while ensuring their safety, the exhibition significantly raised awareness of the library’s resources and enhanced users’ appreciation for its exceptional and valuable holdings. The retrieval and research use of related items notably increased, successfully transforming cultural display into knowledge production. Such collection-centered promotional activities have not only reinforced the library’s role as an academic hub but also redefined the mission of modern academic libraries—from traditional knowledge repositories to dynamic activators and disseminators of cultural heritage, playing an increasingly vital role in academic research and cultural transmission.3. Preservation Education and Outreaching: Visits to the Preservation Centre are organized to educate students on the principles of preservation and conservation. These visits demonstrate common types of damage to paper-based materials, showcase various treatment techniques, and provide opportunities for different hands-on practices. Through professional guided tours and in-depth explanations, supplemented by real-life examples from the library’s collection and conservation treatments, participants gain an intuitive understanding of the technical processes and cultural significance behind conservation efforts. These initiatives not only reinforce the library’s role as a guardian of cultural heritage but also enhance public awareness of the importance of preservation and conservation by increasing transparency and interaction with behind-the-scenes work. Additionally, they create a bridge of communication between the library and its users, fostering greater public engagement in cultural heritage preservation.4. Other Activities: The library co-hosts lectures and book launches, inviting faculty, students, and external experts to share academic research findings, promoting knowledge dissemination and exchange.
