Abstract

In 2026, the use of generative AI to support text extraction tasks continues to be the subject of much discussion across the Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM) sector. However, sometimes, a more simple digital solution can help solve digital collections challenges just as effectively. The Controlled Vocabulary Keyword Tagging Tool (hosted via Hugging Face) seeks to demonstrate this in practice, by showing how a lightweight Python script (which can be deployed locally or in an online environment such as Google Colab) can be used to keyword tag textual data. Further to this, the tool illustrates how this approach can be extended through the addition of simple rules (e.g. if 'x' then also 'x') to enable more complex tagging without reliance on generative AI models.
