Understanding experiences of bacterial meningitis aftereffects and aftercare in Aotearoa New Zealand: A research report
Abstract
Bacterial meningitis is a fast-moving infection with potentially life-threatening consequences. In this report, we outline key findings from an exploratory research project that aimed to understand people’s experiences with long term recovery from bacterial meningitis. Supported by a bursary from the Meningitis Foundation of Aotearoa New Zealand, and led by postgraduate student Kate Smith and academic supervisor Dr Octavia Calder-Dawe, the project was designed to address two key questions:• What can New Zealand-based survivors tell us about the physical, psychological, and social impacts of bacterial meningitis?• What are New Zealand-based survivors’ experiences with, and aspirations for, aftercare and support following hospital discharge?
