Abstract

This FAIRsharing record describes: The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard and framework, introduced by Anthropic, that standardises how AI models, especially Large Language Models (LLMs), connect to and share information with external tools, data, and systems, acting like a "USB for AI" to enable seamless, simplified integration for richer context and more powerful automation, moving beyond isolated models. It defines a common language for LLM applications (clients) to request data or actions from external services (servers), overcoming the complexity of fragmented, custom integrations.
