Abstract

The article analyzes the external and internal factors in the development of regular urban planning in Russia, demonstrating the ambiguity of its assessments by theorists of different periods. It proposes the role of the industrial city plans of the Urals and Siberia in the development of regular Russian urban planning, a concept that requires further research. The authors demonstrate the groundlessness of absolutizing the contradiction between the geometric (rational) and expressive (artistic) components of urban plans and introduce the concept of urban regularity, which implies a synthesis of these two. A number of related concepts are also introduced into scholarly circulation, in particular the «module of urban regularity».
