Abstract

Archaeological research in Porkhov Fortress in 2023–2024 was conducted as part of the completion of the scientific and design documentation for the preservation of the cultural heritage site “Porkhov Fortress Ensemble”, dating from the late 14th century, covering a total area of 92.5 square meters in 12 test pits located throughout the fortress. Excavations investigated the structures of the first secret passage to the water; the depths, structure, and condition of the lower part of the fortress walls and towers were determined; the historic passage of the Pskov Gate with its paving was uncovered; the parameters of the western wall of the Pskov Zakhab were identified; the levels of the daylight surfaces of different stages were established; data on the engineering and geological conditions of the monument’s territory were clarified. During the 2022–23 excavations, a collection of 214 individual finds was assembled. Most of the items are made of metal: parts of gun and lock mechanisms, keys, staples, scrapers, horseshoes, fragments of jewelry, coins from the 15th to 20th centuries, lead seals from the early 20th century, and others. Ceramic material includes fragments of pottery vessels from the 15th to 20th centuries.
