Abstract

The article is devoted to the procedure of organization of Pskov flax selling on the foreign market in the first half of the 16th century. Flax initially did not belong to the category of “staple” goods that met Hanseatic standards, that facilitated the falsification of high-quality “holy flax” from Pskov by mixing it with cheap Livonian varieties, as well as changing its supply routes to the Hanseatic market. Russian flax was originally transported to Revel via Dorpat and Narva, but since the early 1520s, due to the legalization of Russian trade along the Marienburg Road by Livonian Magister Plettenberg, a Pskov–Marienburg–Riga logistics chain was formed. It prompted Dorpat and Narva to launch a campaign to close the Marienburg Road, using falsification of incoming to Marienburg flax as one of the pretexts as well as anti-re-grading measures and substitution of the goods type.
