Abstract
The late medieval population of Eastern Europe in the 14th–16th centuries, the Pskov land in particular, is not so numerously in paleoanthropological sources as compared to the population of other epochs. The skeletal remains from the Ilyinsky-VII and Vvedensky-I excavations make it possible to obtain some of the missing valuable information. The goal of this article is to investigate the morphology of the skeletal system of the Pskov population in the 14th–15th/16th centuries and to evaluate the obtained data against the background of the author’s materials on the synchronous population from the territory of Belarus. A total of 25 individuals were studied: 14 (6 men, 8 women) from the cemetery near the Church of Koz’ma and Damian s Primostya (Ilyinsky-VII excavation) and 11 (10 men, 1 woman) from the cemetery in Plekhanovsky Posad (Vvedensky-I excavation). In terms of longitudinal bone sizes, the male sample from the cemetery near Plekhanovskiy Posad (average-sized population) is slightly superior to the undersized population buried near the Church of Sts. Cosmas and Damian from Primostye. Both groups are characterized by a medium-massive skeleton. Differences are observed in the indices of longitudinal skeletal proportions: the skeletons from the Ilyinsky-VII excavation are characterized by average proportions of the arm and leg segment ratio, while those from Vvedensky-I are characterized by pronounced shortening of the legs relative to the arms. In terms of longitudinal bone sizes, the combined male sample from Pskov in the 14th–15th/16th centuries is characterized as short in relation to the comparative groups. In terms of massiveness, the studied group gravitates toward the later population of Pskov and the population of the Neman Region, and in terms of proportion indices, toward the population of the Neman Region (14th–16th centuries). The results obtained are generally consistent with the existing understanding of the Baltic anthropological zone. Within the tall anthropological zone, medium-height and short anthropological components are recorded, represented by the population of the Neman Region and Pskov. Due to the small number of samples, the data are preliminary
