Abstract
During the archaeological excavations of 2023–2024 at the Church of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste in Pechory, a representative series of skeletal remains from the second half of the 16th – first half of the 18th centuries was obtained. A comprehensive and in-depth study of these remains is currently being conducted by a large team of bioanthropologists. This paper presents preliminary results of paleodemographic analysis, the part that concerns dynamics of child and adolescent mortality. A total of 102 skeletons were studied. The distribution of deceased children and young individuals by the proposed age cohorts was analyzed and an assessment was made of the adequacy of the obtained values, taking into account the characteristics of the source used. A comparison of mortality among children and adolescents in Pechory and Pskov which showed generally similar dynamics of this process in both cities was conducted. Attention is drawn to the influence of “post-mortem selection” on the obtained data and the need for a more thorough analysis of the results in the paleodemographic investigations.
