Abstract

The study covers 54 archaeological objects from Staraya Russa, found in the layers of the 12th–19th centuries. The analysis of the wood species shows that they are made mainly of oak, as well as pine, ash and spruce. It is revealed that the shovels cannot be strictly divided by function – tools of the same design could have been used for different jobs. The collection was divided into groups, varying in shape and size. Earthmoving shovels, shovels with very short handles, “ordinary” shovels with thick blades, “ordinary” shovels with thin blades and shovels with large blades were highlighted. Wooden shovels vary greatly in shape and size, which may be explained by the fact that they were intended for a variety of jobs and people of different physical abilities.
