Abstract

The article is dedicated to the analysis of leather items from the excavations in Gogolya Street in 1978–79 (headed by T. V. Sergina). The cultural layer of this excavation allowed organic materials to be preserved in good condition. The collection of leather items numbers 250 units, including parts of shoes, mittens, sheaths and bags, for which a range of analogies is given and the dating of specific items is given. The general dating of the collection is the 15th–18th centuries. In addition to the well-known and mass categories of leather finds (shoes, sheaths), the attribution of rare and unique items is given: a sling, shoes made of “Bulgari” leather. The analysis of the location of the excavation, together with the data of the historical topography of the city and the condition of the products themselves, allows us to assume a connection between the fall of finds into the layer and their utilization.
