Abstract

This article identifies a previously unrecorded window style that is characteristic of Novgorodian architecture from the second half of the 12th century onwards. During the first half of the century, arched windows with parallel side walls predominated in Novgorod and Pskov. By the mid-12th century, such windows were still present in two churches in Ladoga, but a new form of window had begun to appear in the central bays and apses. This new form consisted of two parts: the exterior retained a section with parallel side walls, while the interior was splayed with oblique side walls that widened inwards. This form is a truncated variant of the double-splayed window, which originated in Romanesque architecture in Western Europe and spread throughout Medieval Rus’ from the second quarter of the 12th century. During the second half of the 12th century, windows with internal splay alone became the only form employed in Novgorodian architecture. By the beginning of the 13th century, these had been replaced by double-splayed windows, which had reached Novgorod from southern Rus’.
