Abstract

This article presents archival drawings of the Church of the Archangel Michael at Skovorodka (1355), a structure commissioned by Novgorodian Archbishop Moisei. This mid-fourteenth-century monument of the Novgorod architectural school was destroyed during the Second World War, and its remains have yet to be systematically studied. In this context, any available data concerning its structure and architectural form is of particular significance. Evidence suggests that no traces of galleries were visible in the western third of the church and that the western piers were circular to a considerable height, although this is unlikely their original form, that the eastern third was vaulted with cylindrical (barrel) vaults, whereas the western third employed quarter-circular vaults derived from the vaulting system of the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God at the Peryn Monastery. In addition to narrow slit windows, the church featured openings on the diagonal facets of the drum that were internally framed with trefoil arches. Another highly unusual feature was the circular rose window on the western façade.
