Abstract

As one of the defining features of Greek architecture, adobe brick became widely used in the Bosporus region. This study examines adobe brick samples recovered from rural settlement excavations to identify their specific characteristics and constructional use. These data were supplemented by material from ancient Bosporan and Mediterranean cities. Among the distinctive features of Bosporan brick are its considerable dimensions and its square or adaptable form, which was suited to particular structural requirements. The technique of reinforcing adobe brick walls with wooden beams, along with certain masonry patterns, was evident not only in the Bosporan context but also in other regions of the Greek world. During the construction of the network of fortresses on the Fontalovsky Peninsula, it is possible that a workshop existed which produced standardised adobe bricks.
