Abstract

The beginning of a systematic, truly scientific study of the Cas pian basin was laid in the XVIII century under Peter the Great, when Rus sia became a maritime power. Of course, the main directions of Russia's naval and trade policy at that time, and after Peter the Great, were the Baltic and Black Seas. However, Peter did not forget about the East either - he took care of the development of trade with eastern countries, about the defense of the southeastern outskirts of the Russian state, developed and settled by Russian immigrants. Peter the Great paid serious attention to the Caspian Sea. As a result of the research carried out by the Russian expeditions of the Academy of Sciences of the Peter the Great era, the first special map of the Caspian Sea was compiled.
