Abstract

The Islamization of the highlanders of the North Caucasus, in particular the Chechens, is an issue that requires deep reflection, clarification of many nuances and detailing of individual aspects, despite the fact that a wealth of experience has been accumulated: regional and global – in the study of this most important topic, especially in modern conditions of searching for a stable format of interstate, intercivilizational relations, the world order as a whole. The authors of solid works have expressed different versions about the time and conditions of the adoption of Islam by Chechens, about the contradictory nature of this multifaceted process, about the undeniable influence on its course and outcome not only internal, but to a large extent also external – geopolitical factors, in particular the Russian and Iranian-Turkish rivalry in the Caucasus. The authors of the report made an attempt in a new way, through the prism of the impact of all these factors combined, to comprehend the chronological and event sequence of the Islamization of Chechens, summing up their research with the conclusion that it was this spiritual-moral – religious transformation that played a decisive role in completing the historically long process of formation of the Chechen ethnic group. 73 According to the authors, the culmination of the final stage of the spread and final establishment of Islam in the territory of the historical settlement of Chechens was the reform movement led by Sheikh Mansur (Ushurma), which eventually acquired a wide geographical scope in the Caucasus region. The authors consider this movement as the first organized performance of the highlanders aimed at achieving unity, overcoming existing remnants that were really barriers to their development - ethnogenesis. The main stages of Sheikh Mansour's religious and militarypolitical activities are outlined and characterized.
