THE GEOPOLITICAL SITUATION OF THE CAUCASUS IN THE LAST QUARTER OF THE XVIII CENTURY (THE MAIN DIRECTIONS OF THE INTERNAL AND FOREIGN POLICY OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIR IN THE REGION)
Abstract
The article examines the main directions of the domestic and foreign policy of the Russian Empire in the Caucasus. The internal direc tion includes: 1) the transformation of the Kizlyar-Mozdok line into the Azov-Mozdok line; 2) the establishment of the first Caucasian viceroyalty in 1785. It refers to the external: 1) the rivalry of the Russian, Ottoman Empires and Safavid Iran for the establishment of control over the main waterways and land routes in the Caucasus region; 2) the change in the policy of the Russian Empire towards the highlanders of the Caucasus. The military-political rivalry between Turkey, Iran and Russia for estab lishing their control over the region is associated with the geopolitical, geo-economic and geostrategic significance of this territory. Addressing this problem allows us to consider the management mechanisms by which a pro-Russian policy aimed at integrating the region into the Russian state was carried out in the Caucasus. Special attention is paid to the foreign policy situation and how it was reflected in the Caucasus, as well as changes in approaches to its management after the strengthening of Rus sia's position by the last quarter of the XVIII century.
