Abstract
The article presents a critical analysis of the application of the dictionary definitions unification method for studying metaphor semantics. It identifies the method's key advantages, such as the systematization of lexicographic data and the introduction of quantitative criteria (the brightness index). Fundamental limitations of the method are also described, including its inherent subjectivity, the risk of "forced" unification of disparate lexicographic material, and the issue of sample non-representativeness. The author substantiates the thesis that overcoming the "lexicographic lag" – the gap between the static (dictionary-based) description of metaphor semantics and their dynamic nature – requires a paradigm shift. As a solution, a comprehensive, multi-level methodology is proposed, integrating analytical, constructive-projective, and verification stages. The most crucial elements of this approach are a large scale psycholinguistic experiment based on a stratified random sample (N ≥ 900), a three-tier model for coding verbal responses, and the development of a prototype for a new-type dictionary that captures the variability and dynamics of metaphor semantics.
