Abstract

This article examines the business correspondence between the commandants of Kizlyar and one of the influential Kumyk princes, A. Khamzin. It is shown that this correspondence provides insight into certain aspects of political and ethnosocial processes in the Terek-Sulak interfluve in the 18th century. Kumyk princes of the Soltan-Magmut line attempted to impose their "patronage" on the multinational population of this region and even on some border communities of Chechnya west of the Aksai River. How ever, the consolidation of the Chechen people in the 16th–18th centuries, accompanied not only by the formation of their own principalities but also by the growing power of free societies with stable relations between them, led to limitations on such attempts and even to a significant migration of Chechens into the Terek-Sulak interfluve and the growth of their influence there. At the same time, internal rivalries among the Kumyk princes hindered the implementation of Russian state policy toward the mountain societies and peoples. As a result, from the second half of the 18th century, Russian authorities began to gradually limit the Kumyks' attempts to exercise sovereignty, including in the internal affairs of governing the mountain population.
