Abstract

The article, based on the documents of the Kizlyar Comman dant's Office Foundation 379 and special historical literature, examines the movement of Sheikh Mansur and the attitude of the rulers of the Zasu lak Kumykia towards him. According to the authors, it was Sheikh Man sour who first formulated and developed the idea of an imam in the Cau casus region as the legitimate leader of all Muslims. From the very beginning of his activities, the Kumyk rulers and a significant part of the population under their control provided him with great support. Concerned about their position, the Russian administration, using various levers of pressure, managed by the end of 1786 to obtain from the Zasulak rulers a refusal to support Sheikh Mansur and the issu ance of amanats. The change in the position of the Zasulak rulers, as well as the princ es of Little Kabarda and the elders of Chechnya, was further influenced by the military failures of the second half of 1785, especially two defeats at Kizlyar and the failure of the campaign in Kabarda.
