Abstract

Currently, a new Moscow school of analysts (Yu.N. Kholopov, T.S. Kyurigyan, G.I. Lyzhov) is actively developing, which has proclaimed a return to the structural theories of the 19th-century German musicologists Marx, Busler, Riemann. The article by Yu.N. Kholopov, "Harmony and the Dance Genre", which was recently published on the initiative of T.S. Kyurigyan, reveals the vulnerable aspects of a method that allows for a rather arbitrary division of a composer's musical score into fragments that form coherent phrasing structures. The widespread use of the term "song form" by educators of the new Moscow school in relation to compositions that do not have a direct connection to the traditional Russian understanding of the word "song" poses significant conceptual and terminological challenges. The article discusses the negative trends of these innovations (or rather, the "old" and contradictory ideas of Russian analytical science).
