Abstract

Motor learning refers to how we develop and refine physical skills through practice. This research investigated whether exercise in the form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) before skill practice could enhance or “prime” motor learning. The studies investigated different types of skills, timeframes of learning, and genetic variability. The findings show HIIT priming can enhance motor learning and memory across various stages of learning, from single sessions to multiple days and weeks, but effects depend on task demands and learning timeframe. This research could help optimise training programs to maximise learning within and across sessions, which may have therapeutic applications in the future.
