Abstract

The true burden of anaphylaxis remains unclear due to a lack of reliable data. This thesis provides new evidence on trends, care pathways and management for anaphylaxis. Linked ambulance, emergency department, hospital and death data from Western Australia, show increasing anaphylaxis rates from 2010 to 2020, with more favourable trends seen in children compared to older ages over time. Most people present directly to the ED however coding is sub-optimal. Pre-hospital adrenaline is received in most cases, yet the need for multiple doses is high. Integrating knowledge from anaphylaxis registries and health service use, can inform future anaphylaxis reporting systems.
