Abstract

This short creative non-fiction piece explores the experience of a single swim within my practice of swimming as a way to cope with trouble outside the pool and beyond my research in 2025.‘Nothing’ to its much more dramatic partner, ‘A Lot’, this piece is an ode to the magic and restoration that swimming pools can bring to life.Imagery in the piece and its captions also highlight the often overlooked potential of swimming pools as a community resource that offer much more than simply 'learn to swim' and access to physical fitness, including as a safe, enjoyable and positive community resource during extreme heat and bushfire threat. The piece was first published in Oculus Journal 2025 located online here Oculus | Graduate Research | Melbourne School of Design
