Abstract

Peter and the Starcatcher is a story of discovery and becoming. Molly is a junior Starcatcher, on the cusp of womanhood and railing against the restrictions it will place on her in Victorian society. The Boy has been forged by the industrial orphanage complexes, with no self or name given him. He finds identity in sympathy or opposition to those he encounters while exploring the island that will become Neverland. Audiences find meaning in the importance of not only where we are going, but also where we came from. Navigating their journeys of becoming, characters are contextualised in a stage design anchored by an abstracted compass rose. Mirroring the continuous shifts and changes in characters, players, costumes and locales, set elements transform on their own journey to becoming, and finding ‘home’.
