Gift and souvenir ware by Waninga Studio, Sydney
Abstract
This paper brings together what can be reconstructed about Waninga Studio, its owners, and its products despite the lack of catalogues or surviving business archives. Waninga Studio was a small Sydney pottery business that operated during the post–World War II boom in locally made home décor, gifts, and souvenirs. Waninga appears closely linked to Little Sydney Pottery, where a decorator named Avril and a worker named Bob were recorded in the early years. The study identifies them as Sydney-born decorator Avril Theresa and her Czech-born husband Bohumil (“Bob”) Janout, who arrived in Australia as a displaced person in 1950. Waninga Studio likely began around 1955–56, when demand for souvenirs rose ahead of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, and the studio’s rarity today suggests it may have run only for a few years. The analysis is based on a systematic online search for objects and images (completed in January 2026). All confirmed pieces carry a “Waninga | Studio | Australia” stamp. The output is (arbitrarily) grouped into motif “series,” including Indigenous figures, Indigenous-inspired symbols, tropical fish and birds, Australian landscapes, domestic animals, native flora, ballerinas, and abstract/geometric patterns, plus a small range of coffee sets and some lamps. The shapes are limited, with wall plates the most common. Technically, the ware is slip-cast and often very thin-walled, which helps explain frequent cracking and heavy surface wear seen in surviving examples. The decoration ranges from finely detailed sgraffito work to much looser brush-painted scenes, hinting at different hands or uneven production. A closer look at the Indigenous-themed imagery shows it follows common mid-century stereotypes, including romanticised male “hunter/warrior” figures and highly sexualised portrayals of women, highlighting how souvenir ceramics reflected broader attitudes of the period.
